Nav Gurm announces run for Fresno City Council

The Democrat is taking his first run at political office after working as a local consultant while earning his law degree.

Local political consultant Nav Gurm has launched a campaign for Fresno City Council District 7.

Gurm hopes to succeed Councilmember Nelson Esparza, who is running for State Senate.

Driving the news: Gurm owns Five River Strategies, a consulting firm that focuses on local public affairs.

  • He also worked for Esparza at Fresno City Hall and attended UC Davis for his law degree.
  • Gurm currently works for a statewide nonprofit to help underserved communities and support youth development.

What he’s saying: “I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for Fresno City Council District 7,” Gurm said. “I’ve witnessed the challenges our community faces and the incredible potential we hold. I am committed to putting working families first and addressing the critical issues that impact our neighborhoods.”

  • Gurm identified affordable living, public safety, reliable infrastructure and housing as the top issues he wants to tackle on the council.
  • “I believe in Fresno’s potential and am ready to work tirelessly to make our city a place where its neighborhoods and its people can thrive,” Gurm said.

Zoom in: Gurm has already raised $50,000 for his campaign ahead of the June 2026 election.

  • He boasts the support of many prominent Democratic city leaders, including his former boss Esparza and Councilmembers Annalisa Perea, Tyler Maxwell and Miguel Arias.
  • Gurm is also endorsed by Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez, former Fresno County Supervisor Henry R. Perea and Fresno County Assessor Paul Dictos.
