Modesto lawmaker resigns seven months early

Nine years into his position, Bill Zoslocki is calling it quits. Here’s why.

Bill Zoslocki, a longtime Modesto City Councilman, announced Wednesday he would be departing before his term expired in December.

“I am approaching the end of my extended 9-year term this November, which is a year longer than what I was originally elected to serve,” the two-term lawmaker said in his resignation letter. “But now, I need to step aside, unable to complete the remainder of this extended term, because I have sold my house in the district and, after prolonged consideration, determined my future will be served outside my district.”

Zoslocki’s exit comes partially due to the city’s residency requirements for its lawmakers.

McClatchy reported that the council member is in the midst of a divorce and sold his family home on March 2.

Modesto’s City Charter gives the City Council 30 days to fill Zoslocki’s seat or opt to filled it via the next scheduled election, on Nov. 8.
