Athletics drop Oakland from branding with Sacramento move on the horizon

The A’s won’t include Sacramento as part of its branding, even though the club will play in the city for three seasons.

The Athletics are officially no longer associated with the City of Oakland.

The A’s announced their new branding on Monday and revealed that the team will not add Sacramento to its name while it plays in California’s capital for a few years.

The big picture: According to the official brand transition guidelines released by the A’s, the team is only to be referred to as the Athletics or A’s without a city attached.

  • The new primary logo for the team is the green “A’s,” as the former circular logo that said “Oakland Athletics” is not retired.

What we’re watching: The A’s will play in West Sacramento at Sutter Health Park for the next three seasons until moving to Las Vegas when its new stadium is completed.

  • Sutter Health Park has a capacity of 14,000, with the A’s leaving behind the Oakland Coliseum, which held around 46,000 people with the tarps on the upper deck.

Flashback: This is the third time the A’s are moving in their history. The franchise was launched as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 and moved to Kansas City in 1955 before heading to Oakland in 1968.

  • The A’s were fourth in the American League West Division this year, finishing with a 69-93 record and missing the playoffs for the fourth-straight year.
  • The A’s left Oakland on a high note, however, topping the Texas Rangers 3-2 in their last ever game at the Coliseum.
