Visalia LGBTQ center to receive major grant

Grant funding will be used to help combat the spread of HIV.

The Source LGBT+ Center in Visalia will receive a $600,000 grant over three years from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to help combat the spread of HIV.

The grant is part of the PrEP and PEP Initiation and Retention initiative, which aims to increase access to and utilization of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) among high-risk populations for HIV.

The big picture: The funding will enable the center to offer same-day comprehensive PrEP and PEP navigation services to LGBTQ+, and other groups throughout the region.

  • The grant will also cover the costs of staff and resources needed to establish a PrEP navigation program and address barriers to access like medication expenses, transportation, and stigmas surrounding HIV prevention practices.
