Breaking down Madera Co.’s city council races

A look at the City Council battles across Madera County.

Chowchilla

Three candidates are vying to fill two open seats on the Chowchilla City Council.

Councilman Waseem Ahmed is the only incumbent running in the race.

He is running against dairy farmer Jeff Troost and retired teacher David Grabar.

Since Chowchilla City Council does not have districts, the top two vote getters will be elected.

Councilman Kelly Smith was appointed to his position and is running for a short term without any opposition.

Madera

Madera City Council will not appear on the November ballot due to a lack of challengers.

District 1 Councilwoman Cece Gallegos, District 3 Councilman Steve Montes and District 5 Councilwoman Elsa Mejia are all up for reelection.

But all three councilmembers are running unopposed, so the county elections office has moved those contests “off ballot,” meaning they have a walkover to another term in office.
