California’s service corps comes in as largest in the nation

Over 10,000 people will have paid opportunities with the state’s service corps.

California is launching a new service year with a service corps that is larger than the Peace Corps.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that the California Service Corps has over 10,000 members.

The big picture: The state’s service corps will provide over five million service hours next year, helping local communities with tutoring students, disaster recovery and helping people find resources and services to combat food insecurity.

  • Service corps members will also plant trees, help prevent wildfires and install solar panels throughout the state.
  • Programs for the California Service Corps include CaliforniansForAll College Corps, Youth Service Corps, California Climate Action Corps and AmeriCorps California.

Zoom out: Service corps members receive living stipends, and many of them can receive up to $10,000 to use toward higher education once they complete their service.

What they’re saying: “As we launch this new service year with the nation’s largest service corps, we reaffirm that service to others is the highest form of civic duty,” Newsom said in a statement. “These paid opportunities embody the best of California’s values – a commitment to each other, mutual understanding, and the belief that when we lift others, we all rise together.”
