Jake Haener diagnosed with rare form of skin cancer

The former Bulldog great told reporters Friday that it is not life-threatening at this point.

Former Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener revealed Friday that he has a rare form of skin cancer.

Haener was wearing a bandage on the right side of his face at training camp with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, drawing the question from the media.

What he’s saying: Haener, 25, did not specify what type of skin cancer he has, but said it is rare to see it at his age.

  • “It’s kind of something that just popped up,” Haener said. “I was kind of worried about it. My family was kind of worried about it. It was kind of this random bump.”
  • He said he saw a dermatologist and had the bump removed. A biopsy revealed that it was cancerous.
  • Haener said the cancer is not “a life-threatening thing right now,” adding that he will consult with doctors next week to discuss his next steps.
  • “I have to get a different procedure done on my face,” Haener said. “So we’re just trying to take the necessary steps in order to see how long I can wait until I have to get that procedure done.”

State of play: Haener, a fourth round pick in 2023, is battling to be the backup to fellow former Bulldog Derek Carr.

  • The New Orleans Saints are currently holding training camp at UC Irvine.
