Fong, Boudreaux advance in special election

The top two finishers in the March primary also placed as the top candidates in the special election for Congressional District 20.

It will take another two months to determine who will serve out the rest of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s seat in Congress.

Asm. Vince Fong (R–Bakersfield) and Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux have advanced to the run-off after securing the top two spots in Tuesday’s special election.

The results are in: Fong, as he did in the primary a couple weeks ago, leads the field at 40.8 percent, per the latest count Wednesday morning.

  • Boudreaux is in second at 26.2 percent, over 3,000 votes ahead of Democrat Marisa Wood, who is at 23.1 percent.
  • Kyle Kirkland (5.2 percent) and Harmesh Kumar (2.5 percent) are the only other candidates to receive at least one percent of the votes.

What we’re watching: With no candidate winning at least 50 percent of the vote, Fong and Boudreaux will advance to the May 21 run-off election.

What they’re saying: “I am honored to continue making the case for a safer Valley in Congress rooted in real experience,” Boudreaux said. “I want to thank the thousands of voters who cast their vote for my vision. I look forward to a terrific spring campaign to restore a badly-needed Valley voice in Washington to serve and represent our communities in Fresno, Tulare, Kings and Kern counties.”

  • Fong said, “I am grateful that voters have once again chosen experienced, common-sense leadership to represent the Central Valley in Washington D.C. I wish each of the candidates that ran in the primary and this special election well moving forward and congratulate them on hard-fought campaigns. With our state and nation in crisis, I will continue to make the case that experienced leadership is needed to deliver common-sense results to Central Valley families.”
