FEMA worker fired for skipping Trump-supporting homes in hurricane response

The agency announced that the unnamed employee has been terminated after discriminating against homes that had signs supporting President-elect Donald Trump.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) worker was fired for instructing staff to avoid homes with yard signs supporting President-elect Donald Trump during Hurricane Milton’s recovery efforts in Florida.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell announced the firing on Sunday.

Driving the news: The incident was described as targeted discrimination against Trump supporters by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

  • DeSantis ordered an investigation into the matter, accusing the federal bureaucracy of weaponizing government for partisan reasons.
  • Details about the incident’s specific time and location were scarce, but it was noted that the FEMA workers were assisting in the recovery from Hurricane Milton’s impact in Florida.

What they’re saying: “This is a clear violation of FEMA’s core values and principles to help people regardless of their political affiliation,” Criswell said in a statement. “This was reprehensible.”

  • She added that she will do everything to ensure something like this never happens again.
