MW settles on 10-game football schedule

Finally, amid all the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Fresno State football and first year head coach Kalen DeBoer have a season to prepare for.

The Mountain West announced Wednesday its adjusted fall sports schedule for football, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country.

All sports can begin games the week of Sep. 26.

“Should further modifications become necessary, including delay or cancellation of competition, the Mountain West Board of Directors is prepared to do so,” the conference said in a statement.

Instead of the regular 12 game schedule, football will play eight conference games, and each university will have the option to play two non conference games.

According to Brett McMurphy of Stadium, one of the reasons to allow for two nonconference games is to accommodate Air Force’s tradition of playing Army and Navy.

Potential dates for the Mountain West Championship Game include Dec. 5, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19.

The conference will announce a final version of the schedule once completed.

All other fall sports will only play a conference schedule.

“The health and welfare of our student-athletes and campus communities continue to be paramount in our decision-making process,” said Commissioner Craig Thompson in a statement. “The modified fall structure as presently configured allows flexibility and time for our athletic programs to be in the best possible position to play collegiate sports this season.

“There is still a lot of work to be done and many important decisions to be made. Today’s announcement provides a path forward as we navigate the weeks ahead.”
