Matt Smith, a former walk on center for Fresno State, has been hired as the football team’s next offensive line coach.
Head Coach Jeff Tedford announced the hiring on Tuesday.
The big picture: Smith played for the Bulldogs from 2016-2021, earning a scholarship after walking on and starting at center from 2019-2021.
- He also was named a team captain during his time as a player.
- After his eligibility ran out, Smith joined Tedford’s coaching staff as an offensive line graduate assistant in 2022, a position he stayed in for two seasons.
- The offensive line coach position opened up after the end of last season when coach Brian Armstrong left for the same job with Nevada.
A group of former ‘Dogs: Smith is now the latest in a long line of former players who serve on Tedford’s staff.
- The list starts with Tedford himself, who played quarterback for Fresno State from 1981-1982,
- Linebackers coach Tim Skipper, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin and defensive backs coach J.D. Williams all played for Fresno State as well.
