Fresno State falls to Northern Illinois in bowl game

Fresno State’s trip to Boise went to overtime, but the Bulldogs were unable to come away with the victory.

Fresno State lost 28-20 to Northern Illinois in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Monday. 

The Bulldogs, who were short-handed due to a number of players entering the transfer portal, took Northern Illinois to overtime. 

The tale of the tape: Freshman wide receiver George Dimopoulos made a significant impact by throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dane Pardridge on the first play of double overtime for Northern Illinois. 

  • Northern Illinois’ victory was sealed by Jordan Hansen’s fourth-down sack, ending the game and Fresno State’s hopes of finishing the season with a winning record. 
  • Dimopoulos, who played quarterback in high school, not only threw the game-winning touchdown but also converted a crucial two-point conversion by passing to quarterback Josh Holst.
  • Holst, a freshman walk-on making his third start, completed 18 of 30 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns for Northern Illinois.
  • Both teams missed 35-yard field goals in the final minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
  • Fresno State’s Bryson Donelson made an impact with 15 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown, along with three catches for 28 yards and another score.
  • Quarterback Joshua Wood contributed to Fresno State’s offense by going 16 of 23 for 180 yards and a touchdown.
