Fresno State announces scheduling agreement with San Jose St. amid Pac-12 shift

The longtime rivals will still fight for the Valley Trophy for several years.

Fresno State and San Jose State will still meet on the gridiron for the foreseeable future even though they will no longer be conference mates.

The universities announced Tuesday that they have agreed to a six-year scheduling agreement starting in 2026.

The big picture: The Bulldogs will travel to San Jose in 2026, 2032 and 2034 and will host the Spartans in 2027, 2029 and 2033.

  • San Jose State is Fresno State’s oldest rival. The universities first played against each other in 1921, and the Bulldogs hold a 45-39-3 record in the series.
  • Fresno State and San Jose State have been in the Mountain West together since the Spartans joined in 2013. Before that, the programs were both members of the Western Athletic Conference and the Big West Conference and others over the years.
  • Fresno State will be joining the Pac-12 in 2026, while San Jose State is slated to stay in the Mountain West.
  • The two programs play for the Valley Trophy, which was introduced in 2013.

What they’re saying: “Fresno State and San Jose State share a rich history that spans over a century, and we are excited to continue this rivalry for years to come,” said Fresno State Director of Athletics Garrett Klassy. “The Valley Trophy represents more than just a game – it’s a battle between two proud programs with deep ties to their communities. As we transition into the Pac-12, maintaining this historic matchup was a priority, and we’re thrilled to secure a long-term agreement that ensures our student-athletes, alumni, and fans can continue to experience one of college football’s most meaningful rivalries.”
