A committee named SAC 12, independent from Sacramento State, has been established with the aim of elevating the football program to the highest level of college football and eventually securing an invitation to join either the Pac-12 or Mountain West conferences.
The committee comprises state and local politicians, business and union leaders, and former Hornets receiver and NFL player Otis Amey.
The big picture: Recent conference realignment in the FBS, including the addition of Mountain West schools to the Pac-12 and potential openings in the Mountain West, has influenced the efforts to position Sacramento State for potential conference membership changes.
- Sacramento State currently plays in the Big Sky conference at the FCS level and has achieved significant success, making the FCS playoffs in football for the last three seasons.
Driving the news: With Sacramento being California’s capital city, the 20th-largest media market in the country, and home to a university with over 30,000 students, there is a strong belief in the potential for Sacramento State to become a major conference member and specifically join the Pac-12.
- Apart from football, Sacramento State has 21 athletic teams and boasts a wide range of sporting programs, reflecting the comprehensive and competitive nature of the university’s athletic offerings.
What they’re saying: “It’s exciting to see key members of the Sacramento community celebrating the success of the Sacramento State Athletics program and sharing their interest in helping shape the vision of the future,” Sacramento State said in a statement. “It makes us proud to be part of such a wonderful, supportive community, and we will continue to support our student-athletes at the highest levels possible.”
