NCAA investigating Fresno State basketball program for sports gambling

Two players have been suspended from competition while the investigation is ongoing.

Fresno State men’s basketball is under investigation by the NCAA for potential ties to sports gambling, according to a report from ESPN.

Two players have been suspended from play while the university reviews the situation.

The big picture: Fresno State received a tip about potential sports gambling on the men’s basketball team, according to the report.

  • The university then involved the NCAA after receiving the tip.
  • Fresno State announced Saturday that guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins are being withheld from competition while the university “reviews an eligibility matter.”
  • Former Bulldog Mykell Robinson is also being investigated by the NCAA, according to ESPN. Robinson is no longer listed on the roster.

State of play: Fresno State is having an historically rough year under first-year head coach Vance Walburg.

  • The Bulldogs are 5-23, with the latest loss coming against Air Force on Saturday 72-69. Fresno State has now lost its last 10 games and is 1-16 in Mountain West play.
  • Weaver and Collins have been two of Fresno State’s best players this year, averaging 12.5 and 12 points per game, respectively. Robinson averaged 10.3 points across 17 games.
