Selma City Council candidate charged with lying about home address

The candidate could spend years in prison for filing a false declaration.

A Selma City Council candidate has been charged with lying about where she lives.

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that Jobita Camacho has been charged for filing a false declaration of candidacy and for perjury.

Driving the news: Camacho is accused of submitting paperwork to run for the District 4 council seat on July 25, despite living in District 2.

  • The District Attorney’s Office says Camacho filed the paperwork under the penalty of perjury.
  • Camacho faces one count of elections fraud and one count of perjury.

What we’re watching: Camacho will appear in court on Sep. 25 for her arraignment.

  • She faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted.
  • As of now, Selma voters will still have an opportunity to vote for Camacho in November. Fresno County Clerk and Registrar of Voters James Kus told The Sun that a candidate would be taken off the ballot once found guilty of such charges.
