In middle of debate, Cox served with subpoena over unpaid bills from 2018 campaign

John Cox, the San Diego businessman and gubernatorial contender, faced an unexpected heckler of sorts during a Tuesday night debate before the Sacramento Press Club.

A process server delivered legal papers to Cox’s feet at the outset of the debate for a lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court over unpaid consulting fees Cox racked up during his 2018 campaign.

Cox was ordered to pay Virginia-based GOP ad-maker Jim Innocenzi more than $100,000 for consulting fees accrued during his failed 2018 campaign along with attorney’s fees for his successful suit.
