Madera Co. Sheriff’s deputy lauded for saving toddler’s life

The deputy used an AED to regain the pulse of a young boy in Madera County.

A Madera County Sheriff’s deputy saved the life of a toddler over the weekend.

How it happened: The Madera County Sheriff’s Communication Center received an emergency medical call on Saturday evening for an unresponsive 18-month-old boy.

  • Deputies responded to the scene, going to a residence in the 32000 block of Avenue 9 while the father of the child rendered CPR.
  • Deputy Jessica Martinez arrived at the home within minutes and took over from the father.
  • Martinez applied an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the child and was able to bring back his pulse.
  • The boy was then transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment and remains in stable condition.

What they’re saying: “We are incredibly grateful to have life-saving equipment like AEDs available to both our deputies and the public, ensuring that when seconds count, we have the tools to protect and preserve life,” said Sheriff Tyson Pogue. “Deputy Martinez’s decisive action and training made all the difference in this critical moment, reminding us why readiness and the right resources are so vital to our community’s safety.”
