Newsom appoints new Fresno Co. judge to fill Harrell’s seat 

The Fresno County Superior Court had a vacancy since Judge Arlan Harrell joined the 5th District Court of Appeal last November.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed a new judge to the Fresno County Superior Court. 

The big picture:Newsom announced Monday that he has appointed David Chiappetta to serve as a judge. 

  • Chiappetta, a Democrat, has been a partner at Perkins Coie since 2013. 
  • Prior to that, Chiappetta was special counsel at Corrs Chambers Westgarth from 2009 to 2013 and held various other positions at other law firms in the decades prior. 
  • He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Washington School of Law. 

Driving the news: The vacancy that Chiappetta is filling was made when Judge Arlan Harrell was elevated to the Court of Appeal.
