Balderrama reportedly applies for Austin police chief job

Fresno’s chief of police, who is currently on paid leave pending an investigation into an affair he had with an officer’s wife, is looking for another job.

Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama is not wasting any time looking for another job while on leave.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Balderrama is one of dozens of candidates who has applied to be the next chief of police in Austin, Texas.

Flashback: The City of Fresno announced on June 6 that Balderrama was under investigation for an inappropriate off-duty relationship.

  • The Sun reported last week that Balderrama was carrying on an affair for over two years with an officer’s wife.
  • Balderrama was placed on paid administrative leave by the city last week as it conducts its investigation.

The big picture: According to the American-Statesman, the chief of police position in Austin opened up last month, and the application process closed on June 10.

  • That means Balderrama applied for the job before he had been placed on leave.
  • Austin has been without a permanent police chief for the last year.
  • There have reportedly been 32 total candidates who have applied for the job.
  • Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said in an online post that the city manager will narrow down the list of applicants to the top candidates who will then be interviewed.
