Kern High School District to resume sports practices

The KHSD Board of Trustees voted to allow on-campus activities and practices to resume on Oct. 26.

Sports practices are returning to campuses in the Kern High School District.

On Monday evening, the KHSD Board of Trustees voted to allow on-campus activities and practices to resume on Oct. 26, following several months without them due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Student-athletes will be allowed to participate in cohorts of 16, a total that includes students and coaches.

This development is a faster return to sports practices than the plan that the CIF previously detailed in June, which was completely dependent on the local and state guidelines.

However, a full return to sports competitions in the Kern High School District is not coming just yet.

Kern County remains in the state’s “purple” tier, the most restrictive category in the state’s reopening plan.

Because of the county’s tier status, schools will have to wait for approval from the local and state health departments to resume games and competitions.

The CIF anticipates that competitions will be permitted to start back up in December or January.
