Orange County Supervisor to plead guilty in COVID fraud

Supervisor Andrew Do resigned from his position at Orange County.

Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do is set to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery in connection with a scheme involving a charity and the misuse of COVID-19 relief funds.

Do allegedly accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to ensure that money went to an organization claiming to feed elderly and disabled people, which instead used the funds to purchase real estate.

The big picture: Following the revelation, Do, a Republican, resigned his position on the board for the county of 3 million people.

  • The case involves the organization Viet America Society, where Do’s daughter was listed as an officer, and authorities seized $2.4 million in connection with the probe.
  • U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada stated that Do received more than $500,000 in payments for his role in the scheme, misallocating the majority of the $9 million earmarked for the meals program.
  • The investigation continues, with no mention of Do’s wife, a judge in Orange County, being implicated in the scheme.
  • Do, a Vietnamese refugee, had previously held positions as a prosecutor and city councilmember before representing the county’s 1st District residents on the board of supervisors.
