California is sending millions of dollars to dozens of apprenticeship programs to support thousands of apprentices.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the funding on Monday.
The big picture: The state will provide $24.7 million to 65 apprenticeship programs across a number of sectors, including healthcare, transportation, education, advanced manufacturing, information technology and the public sector.
- The funding is part of the Apprenticeship Innovation Funding (AIF) program, which has allocated $135 million over three years to support and scale apprenticeship programs. California has already served 190,915 apprentices.
- Funding would support 8,270 apprentices who earn $31.72 per hour on average.
What we’re watching: California’s overall goal is to serve 500,000 apprentices by 2029.
What they’re saying: “We’re taking a bottom-up approach to making sure Californians get the skills they need to get good-paying jobs in every region of the state,” Newsom said in a statement. “These apprenticeships represent thousands of opportunities for Californians to jump into new careers and bring in higher wages for their families.”
