Fresno Councilman: Dire consequences if weed shops OK’d near schools

One Fresno City Council member warned city officials of the incredible legal exposure facing Fresno if a weed shop is approved to open near a school.

A Fresno City Council member is issuing a warning to city officials of the worrisome possibilities surrounding some applicants vying for a cannabis dispensary license located near the city’s schools.

Speaking to Alexan Balekian of KSEE24, Fresno City Councilman Mike Karbassi warned that the city faced considerable legal exposure if a license was granted to an operator opening within 800 feet of a school, daycare, or youth center – a key element of Fresno’s marijuana laws.

The issue first arose following an analysis by The San Joaquin Valley Sun of applicants and preliminary license recipients who were located within the city’s “Sensitive Use Areas,” where cannabis operations are to be banned.
