Soria wins re-election to Assembly as Garcia Rose concedes

Garcia Rose ran a tight race in the March primary but was unable to come away with a win in November with double the voter turnout.

Joanna Garcia Rose has conceded her race against Asm. Esmeralda Soria (D–Fresno) for Assembly District 27.

Garcia Rose announced her concession on Wednesday.

The big picture: Soria, who is wrapping up her first term in the Legislature, is up 53.8% to 46.2%, per the latest vote count on Tuesday afternoon.

  • Soria leads Garcia Rose by around 10,000 votes, punching her ticket back to Sacramento for another two years.

Driving the news: Garcia Rose had a strong showing in the March primary, beating Soria in the two-person race by around 1,000 votes.

  • But the results of the November election showed that the 27th District had exceptionally low voter turnout in the March primary, with less than 58,000 people casting a vote in that election. So far there have been over 117,000 votes processed in the district for the general election.

What they’re saying: “After a hard-fought campaign, it looks like we have fallen just short,” Garcia Rose said. “I want to thank all of our supporters, contributors, and voters who believed in our mission and placed their trust in me to be their next Assemblymember.

  • She continued, “I commend Assemblywoman Soria for running a strong campaign, and I wish her the best as she continues to serve the residents of the 27th Assembly District and the state of California.”
