Richardson holds narrowing lead in Fresno City Council race

Roger Bonakdar picked up slight ground in the District 6 race as around 2,000 more ballots were processed.

The margin for Fresno City Council District 6 is still razor thin, with just a few hundred votes separating the two contenders after the latest update on Thursday. 

Candidates Nick Richardson and Roger Bonakdar will have to wait until next week to get a clearer picture as Fresno County continues to count tens of thousands of ballots. 

Where the race stands: According to the latest totals, Richardson leads Bonakdar 50.49% to 49.37% for the northeast Fresno council seat. 

  • Richardson has 11,658 total votes, putting him ahead of Bonakdar with 11,399 – a difference of only 259 votes. 

Flashback: The final election night tally – which was posted early Wednesday morning – had Richardson up by 319. 

State of play: Only 2,086 ballots were processed from election day through Thursday in the District 6 race, putting the total at 23,091 votes cast so far. 

What we’re watching: Fresno County estimates that it has just under 100,000 ballots to process across the entire county. 

  • So far 222,324 ballots have been processed. 
  • The county estimates it has 94,250 vote-by-mail ballots to count, as well as 5,200 conditional voter registration and provisional ballots. 
  • It is unclear how many of those ballots come from the District 6 area. 

Elsewhere: Fresno City Councilmen Garry Bredefeld and Luis Chavez both held commanding leads in their respective races for the Fresno County Board of Supervisors on election night. 

  • Those leads held steady with Thursday’s update. 
  • Bredefeld leads District 2 Supervisor Steve Brandau 55.56% to 44.02%, with an advantage of nearly 6,300 votes. 
  • Chavez leads District 3 Supervisor Sal Quintero 54.83% to 44.80%, an advantage of nearly 2,400 votes.
