Former NFL quarterback Billy Volek is returning to the Central Valley this weekend to be inducted into the Clovis Unified Athletic Hall of Fame.
The former Clovis West High School and Fresno State quarterback joins several other former district athletes to join the Hall of Fame.
Driving the news: Volek started for three seasons at Fresno State before joining the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent.
- While he was the Titans’ starter for half of the 2004 season, he spent most of his career as a backup quarterback with Tennessee from 2001 to 2005 and the San Diego Chargers from 2006 to 2011.
The big picture: Volek will be honored during Clovis West’s football game on Friday against Clovis High School.
- He will join the other district athletes for the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday at Shaghoian Concert Hall at Clovis North High School. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony following at 6:30 p.m.
- Five other Clovis West athletes and coaches are also being inducted into the Hall of Fame: basketball coach Jose Jernandez; water polo player and swimmer Todd Kemp; water polo player, swimmer and track and field athlete Ryan Indart; golf coach Ken Shipley; and water polo player and swimmer Tristin (Baxter) Kranenburg.
- Clovis East High School track and field athlete and football player Willy Irwin is also joining the Hall of Fame.
- At the team level, Clovis Unified is inducting the 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 Clovis High boys and girls cross country teams.
- Clovis Unified is also presenting the Doc Buchanan Award to Dennis Lindsey.
What they’re saying: “We are excited to induct the 2024 Class into the Clovis Unified Athletic Hall of Fame,” said Assistant Superintendent Steve France. “Every inductee has not only proven that they were incredible student-athletes or coaches, but they are also incredible individuals. Their commitment to excellence is evident and they are a great reflection of our core values for Clovis Unified School District.”
