Harvey Weinstein indicted for more sex crimes

Weinstein faces further charges as he prepares for his retrial.

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, has been indicted on additional sex crimes charges ahead of his retrial in New York, according to Manhattan prosecutors.

The indictment is set to be unsealed at Weinstein’s arraignment scheduled for Sept. 18.

Driving the news: Weinstein, 72, recently underwent emergency heart surgery and was absent from the hearing where the indictment was announced.

  • Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office revealed that evidence of up to three additional allegations against Weinstein, dating back to the mid-2000s, has been presented to a grand jury.
  • Weinstein’s 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges was overturned earlier this year, leading to prosecutors seeking a retrial. It is yet to be determined if the new charges will be included in the retrial or treated as a separate case.
  • The announcement of the new charges follows the decision made by British prosecutors to drop charges of indecent assault against Weinstein. He had been a central figure in the #MeToo movement in 2017, marked by women publicly sharing their experiences with his behavior.
  • Weinstein has consistently maintained that any sexual relations were consensual, despite the allegations against him.

What we’re watching: His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 12, with the retrial tentatively set for November in Manhattan.
