Buchanan High fires World Series MVP Troy Glaus as baseball coach

Buchanan is turning to its former head coach in the interim while it searches for a permanent replacement.

Former World Series MVP Troy Glaus has been fired from Buchanan High School as the head baseball coach.

Brad Fontes, who Glaus replaced, is returning in an interim role, the school announced Monday.

The backstory: Fontes stepped down last June because of his health, leading Buchanan to replace him with Glaus.

  • Glaus had a 13-year career in Major League Baseball primarily as a third baseman. He spent the majority of his career with the then Anaheim Angels, winning the 2002 World Series MVP.

The big picture: Buchanan has not enjoyed a season of success under Glaus, currently sitting at 9-14 and having been most recently swept by Clovis West.

  • The bears are also in fifth place in the Tri-River Athletic Conference with a 2-7 record.

What they’re saying: “We wish Coach Glaus well in his future endeavors and thank him for his work on behalf of Buchanan baseball,” said Buchanan principal Omar Hemaidan in a statement. “I’m pleased Coach Fontes has agreed to step in and support the team through this transition and lend his high caliber experience to our students to finish the season.”
