A Fresno man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly committing a hate crime against Palestine supporters.
The arrest happened at the Porchfest event in the Tower District.
Driving the news: According to Fresno police, Francisco Samaniego, 49, approached a booth that several females had set up.
- Samaniego appeared intoxicated and began arguing with them over their support of Palestine.
- The argument turned into a physical confrontation, and Samaniego ran from the scene but was found by officers.
The big picture: Samaniego was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on one felony and three misdemeanors.
- The felony was for robbery and the other misdemeanors were for battery on a person, violation of civil rights or hate crime and vandalism.
What they’re saying: “The equal protection of all members of our community, regardless of their political affiliation, social status, race, creed, or sexual preference is a top priority for the Fresno Police Department,” said Police Chief Paco Balderrama.
- “The assault which occurred last Saturday at Porchfest is being investigated as a hate crime, and we are happy to say the perpetrator was arrested. The Fresno community does not stand for hate or lawlessness, and we will continue to work with all members of our city to make sure everyone can express their beliefs without fear of violence.”
