Former Fresno State running back Derrick Ward was arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of robbery.

Ward is suspected of being involved in at least five robberies of businesses.

The big picture: Los Angeles Police said on Tuesday that Ward was arrested by officers in North Hollywood.

  • He was not suspected of using a firearm during the robberies.
  • According to TMZ, officers said Ward used force and fear to get money from stores, which included gas stations.
  • Ward was booked into jail on Monday and was being held on $250,000 bail.

A former Bulldog: Ward, who is originally from Los Angeles, played for Fresno State from 1999 to 2000 but struggled with academics and was ruled ineligible.

  • That led him to transfer to Ottawa University in Kansas.
  • He was selected in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the New York Jets but was released at the start of the season.
  • Ward signed with the New York Giants, where he would play until 2008, and won the Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots.
  • He went on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 and wrapped up his career with the Houston Texans in 2010 and 2011.
