After close race in 2022, Soria to face new GOP face for Assembly seat

Soria narrowly beat out Republican Mark Pazin last year. Now another Republican has entered the fold.

Asm. Esmeralda Soria (D–Fresno) will face at least one Republican challenger for her seat next year.

Joanna Garcia Rose announced her campaign for the 27th Assembly District on Wednesday.

Driving the news: Garcia Rose, running as a Republican, lives in Atwater and works as an auditor.

  • Last year Soria ascended from the Fresno City Council to the Assembly, beating former Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin by 2.6 points.
  • But Garcia Rose views the 27th district as a top Democrat-to-Republican flip opportunity since Republican Brian Dahle carried the district by five points in his race against Gov. Gavin Newsom.
  • Garcia Rose graduated from Fresno State with a degree in agricultural business and has a background in farming.
  • …27 …

What they’re saying: “California is on the wrong track, and it’s time we send a professional auditor to Sacramento,” Garcia Rose said in her announcement. “We need someone who will carefully examine the laws and the state’s finances so we can start turning things around.”

  • Garcia Rose added, “Sacramento politicians have made life in the Valley more expensive and dangerous, with less opportunity. It does not have to be this way. I’m running to tell liberal Bay Area and Los Angeles politicians that we have had enough of the corruption, incompetence, and extremism that is forcing families to pack up a U-Haul and move to other states with fewer problems and more freedom.”
