Biden steps in to Calif.’s recall to defend Newsom

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are coming to the rescue of Gov. Gavin Newsom as the embattled Golden State Governor faces stiff opposition ahead of a recall.

“Newsom has faced intense pressure from Republicans over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with critics arguing his policies infringed on individual freedoms and hurt the state economy,” Fox reported. “But Biden said Newsom is ‘leading California through unprecedented crises’ and deserves to retain his office.”

“Gov. @GavinNewsom is leading California through unprecedented crises—he’s a key partner in fighting the pandemic and helping build our economy back better,” Biden tweeted on Thursday night. “To keep him on the job, registered voters should vote no on the recall election by 9/14 and keep California moving forward.”

Biden and Harris are weighing in-person events in California along with continued social media outreach to assist Newsom, a source with knowledge told the cable network.

Kevin Faulconer, the former San Diego Mayor and a leading contender in the replacement race, mocked the White House’s rush to defend Newsom in the wake of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s scandal-driven resignation.

“Gavin Newsom keeps turning to Washington, DC politicians whenever he’s in trouble, but they can’t save him from this recall,” Faulconer said in a statement. “Newsom has made our state unaffordable for middle class families, unsafe for average people to safely walk the streets, and unrecognizable from the Golden State we all know and love.”
