Coors, Fresno, legislators come up big in push to make Tom Flores a Hall of Famer

The Sanger native and four-time Super Bowl champ is a finalist for a spot at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, to be announced Saturday.

First, it was an splashy marketing campaign from Coors Light.

Then, the City of Fresno – backed by Councilwoman Esmeralda Soria – were added into the mix.

Now, California Latino legislators are putting their efforts into getting Sanger native Tom Flores into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Flores, 83, is a four-time Super Bowl winner, once as a player, once as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders and twice as head coach of the Raiders. He is again a finalist for induction into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, having fallen short in the final votes each of the last two years.

“It makes me feel good. Here are people who are talking about issues of the ethnic value of it,” Flores said. “They are very proud that a Hispanic is possible going into the Hall of Fame. There are not too many of us.”

“Tom Flores has broken barriers throughout his career, overcoming adversity to accomplish many firsts for Latinos in the NFL,” Assembly member Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) said in announcing the legislative push that included a resolution in support of Flores’ induction from the California Latino Legislative Caucus.
