Catholic Church among Valley’s largest PPP loan recipients

The Roman Catholic Church and affiliated organizations in Fresno received millions of dollars in forgivable loans, new data from the SBA shows.

The Roman Catholic Church and affiliated organizations in Fresno received millions of dollars through the Paycheck Protection Program loans, new data from the U.S. Small Business Administration shows. 

As long as the church meets certain criteria set by the Small Business Administration – such as using at least 60% of the loan to cover payroll – the loan will be forgiven. 

The SBA granted maximum loan amounts of 2.5 times a company’s average monthly payroll, up to $10 million. 

According to Paycheck Protection Program data, three local organizations affiliated with the Catholic Church received loans. 

The Diocese of Fresno Office of Catholic Education received a loan between $5 and 10 million. The loan was approved on April 28, and the diocese was able to retain a reported 498 jobs under the education office because of the loan. 

The nonprofit organization called the Roman Catholic Bishop of Fresno received a loan between $2 and 5 million. The organization was reportedly able to retain 433 employees and was approved on April 27. 

The Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fresno received a loan between $150,000 and $350,000. The nonprofit organization retained 32 employees due to the loan, which was approved on April 9. 

Catholic Church organizations in other parts of the Valley received PPP loans, too. 

In Stockton, the Catholic Council for the Spanish Speaking of the Diocese of Stockton received between $1-2 million, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Stockton received between $350,000-1 million and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Stockton received between $150,000-350,000. 

Central Catholic High School in Modesto received between $350,000-1 million.
