Three former Fresno State basketball players have been permanently banned from competing in college athletics by the NCAA.
The NCAA announced its decision on Wednesday after finding that Mykell Robinson, Jalen Weaver, and Steven Vasquez either bet on their own games or provided information that enabled others to do so.
The backstory: In February, Fresno State received a tip about potential sports gambling taking place within the men’s basketball team.
- The university involved the NCAA after receiving the tip and suspended Weaver and Zaon Collins while investigating. Robinson had already been removed from the team earlier in the season.
- Collins later returned to the team and is currently listed on Fresno State’s roster.
- The NCAA revealed Wednesday that a sports betting integrity monitor notified the organization about suspicious prop bets placed on Robinson.
The big picture: The NCAA announced that Robinson, Weaver and Vasquez had their collegiate eligibility revoked after the investigation concluded.
- Robinson played for Fresno State last year after transferring ahead of the 2023-2024 season. Weaver was with the Bulldogs the past two seasons as well, while Vasquez played last season with San Jose State after three years as a Bulldog.
- NCAA enforcement staff uncovered evidence during the investigation showing that all three student-athletes shared information about individual betting lines for the purpose of manipulating outcomes to win prop bets.
Zoom in: According to the NCAA’s findings, Robinson and Vasquez, who had been roommates at Fresno State during the 2023-2024 season, made plans over text messages to play poorly.
- In January 2025, Robinson and Vasquez planned for Robinson to underperform in several statistical categories during a regular season game. Robinson, Vasquez and a third party then bet a total of $2,200 on Robinson for his under-line performance and won a $15,950 payout.
- Robinson also placed 13 daily fantasy sports over-line and under-line prop bets during last season, totaling $454. The bets were on parlays that included his own performance. While he did not win on all of the bets, he did collect $618 on one occasion.
- Robinson also placed multiple bets on Weaver, including two bets placed before a game in late December after he and Weaver exchanged information about their respective betting lines. Weaver also placed a $50 prop bet on a parlay for himself, Robinson and a third student-athlete, causing him to win $260.
- Vasquez and Robinson failed to cooperate with the enforcement staff’s investigation.
