Texas sues NCAA over transgender participation

The NCAA has allowed biological men to compete in women’s sports.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against the NCAA over allowing transgender women to participate in women’s athletic events, citing deceptive practices and unfair competition concerns.

The big picture: The lawsuit argues that the NCAA’s promotion of women’s sports as “mixed sex” events where biological males can compete against females misleads consumers who expect fair competition among women.

  • Paxton’s lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction to prevent biological males from competing in women’s athletics, highlighting potential safety risks and physical advantages enjoyed by biological males.

Driving the news: The legal action follows a similar case against the Mountain West Conference for allowing a transgender player to compete in women’s volleyball, which was denied a preliminary injunction due to a lack of demonstrated irreparable harm.

  • Republicans, including President-elect Donald Trump, have emphasized the preservation of fairness in women’s sports and pledged to address transgender policies in schools once the new administration takes office.
