Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been charged with murder in New York City.
Mangione, 26, was taken into custody earlier on forgery and illegal gun charges in Pennsylvania, and is now facing the murder charge that starts the extradition process back to New York.
The big picture: Mangione had been traveling around Pennsylvania in the days after Thompson was killed and was recognized at a McDonald’s restaurant. He was found in possession of multiple fraudulent IDs, a U.S. passport, a firearm, a suppressor, and clothing consistent with those worn during the shooting, as well as a handwritten document that speaks to his motivation and mindset.
- The weapon used in the murder is described as a possible ghost gun, and Mangione was found in possession of the same fake New Jersey ID used by the person of interest to check into a hostel in Manhattan. He was later seen at the Port Authority bus terminal in Washington Heights.
Driving the news: Thompson, 50, was shot outside the Hilton Midtown hotel and was described by the NYPD as a “premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.”
- Investigators released images of a person wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting and initiated an intense manhunt, offering rewards for information leading to an arrest.
- Clues such as a backpack containing a jacket and Monopoly money, expended shells with “delay” and “deny” written on them, and items left at a Starbucks prior to the shooting have been found, but the murder weapon has not been located.
