Rick Scott introduces bill to make daylight savings permanent

Americans would no longer need to change their clocks twice a year if the bill becomes law.

Sen. Rick Scott (R–Florida) and others have introduced a bill to make daylight saving time permanent year-round.

The big picture: The proposed bill would keep time permanently forward, meaning clocks would not be set back at the end of fall.

  • The effort has support from a bipartisan group of senators, including Sens. Patty Murray, Tommy Tuberville, Rand Paul, Ron Wyden, and others.
  • The bill is called the Sunshine Protection Act, aiming to eliminate the practice of falling back and springing forward, which is seen to have real impacts on the economy, health, and happiness.

What they’re saying: “I hear from Americans constantly that they are sick and tired of changing their clocks twice a year – it’s an unnecessary, decades-old practice that’s more of an annoyance to families than benefit to them,” Scott said in a statement.
