Planned Parenthood announces $40 million spend for election

The abortion provider is backing President Joe Biden and Democrats across the nation.

Planned Parenthood will spend $40 million ahead of November’s U.S. elections to support President Joe Biden and leading congressional Democrats.

The nonprofit’s goal is to support voters who are angry at Republican-led efforts to restrict access to abortion and make a difference in key races around the country.

The big picture: The group will target eight states: Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, along with North Carolina, which Democrats hope to flip and Montana, New Hampshire, and New York, which have races that could determine control of the Senate and House.

  • The spending plan includes volunteer and paid canvassing programs, phone banking, and digital, TV and mail advertising to reach voters.

Flashback: Planned Parenthood spent $45 million before the 2020 election cycle and $50 million before the 2022 midterm elections, and has previously focused on pouring money into contests where access to abortion was on the ballot.

What we’re watching:  Local Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations in California, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, and Ohio are also planning advocacy campaigns ahead of November.

What they’re saying: “Abortion will be the message of this election, and it will be how we energize voters,” said Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes, to the Associated Press. “It will be what enables us to win.”
