Nearly 200,000 Teslas recalled over backup camera issue

The problem could cause crashes, although none have been reported to date.

Tesla is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a software glitch that can cause the backup camera to go dark.

The big picture: The recall covers model year 2023 vehicles in the Model Y, Model S and Model X lines that have a “Full Self-Driving” computer.

  • The vehicles being recalled run software version 2023.44.30 through 2023.44.30.6 or 2023.44.100.
  • Documents from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the software instability could prevent the backup camera image from showing when the vehicles are put in reverse.
  • Tesla said in the documents that there are not any crashes or injuries related to the issue that it is aware of.
