Gaetz confirms he is leaving Congress permanently

Gaetz was Trump’s first pick to be Attorney General but dropped out after meeting with Republican Senators.

Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has announced that he will not be returning to Congress in 2025.

Gaetz withdrew from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general and subsequently resigned from the House earlier this month. This occurred before the House Ethics Committee could release a report about its investigation into alleged sexual misconduct, which he has denied.

Driving the news: There was a debate on Capitol Hill about whether Gaetz could return to the House next year after winning reelection this fall, and senior congressional leaders in both parties were involved in discussions on this matter.

What they’re saying: “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch,” Gaetz told conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. “I do not intend to join the 119th Congress.”

  • Gaetz added, “I’m going to be fighting for President Trump. I’m going to be doing whatever he asks of me, as I always have, but I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress.”
