California man pleads guilty to attempted assassination of Kavanaugh

The man entered a guilty plea even though he did not strike a deal with the government.

A California man admitted to trying to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh at his Maryland home in 2022.

The big picture: Nicholas Roske, 29, pled guilty before a judge in Greenbelt, MD, despite not reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

  • He faces a potential life sentence and a $250,000 fine, with sentencing scheduled for Oct 3.

Driving the news: Roske confessed to flying from California to Washington Dulles International Airport in June 2022 before heading to Justice Kavanaugh’s residence with a pistol, crowbar, ammunition, zip ties and other weapons.

  • Authorities apprehended him at the scene.
  • According to Roske, who is undergoing treatment for mental illness, his attempt on Justice Kavanaugh’s life was driven by suicidal thoughts and fears about upcoming Supreme Court decisions.
  • The sudden guilty plea marked a significant development in a case that has been ongoing for nearly three years, culminating in Roske giving up his defense motions with the trial date imminent.
