Torrez Jr. forced to pull out of Save Mart Center return

The Olympic silver medalist will not have an opportunity to fight in front of his Central Valley due to injury.

Tulare native and former Olympian Richard Torrez Jr. will have to wait a little while longer before he steps into the ring again.

Torrez Jr. was scheduled to fight on March 14 at the Save Mart Center.

The big picture: Top Rank Boxing announced Tuesday that Torrez Jr. has been forced to withdraw from the bout due to a training injury.

  • Torrez Jr. was set to face Willie Jake Jr. (11-3-2, 3 KOs) in a six-round heavyweight fight on ESPN.
  • His fight was scheduled to open the main card for Avenal native Jose Ramirez.

What we’re watching: Top Rank said that Torrez Jr. is expected to return to the ring this summer for his next fight when he returns from injury. However, the boxing promoter did not set a date for his return.

  • Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs) is still scheduled to take on Richard “RC” Commey (30-4-1, 27 KOs) at the Save Mart Center later this month. The bout will be televised on ESPN.

State of play: When Torrez Jr. heals up and gets back in the ring, he’ll bring with him his 5-0 record.

  • The 23-year-old southpaw has won all of his fights in his young professional career by knockout.
