Smith is the fifth coach on the current staff who played for Fresno State.

Matt Smith, a former walk on center for Fresno State, has been hired as the football team’s next offensive line coach.

Head Coach Jeff Tedford announced the hiring on Tuesday.

  • He also was named a team captain during his time as a player.
  • After his eligibility ran out, Smith joined Tedford’s coaching staff as an offensive line graduate assistant in 2022, a position he stayed in for two seasons.
  • The offensive line coach position opened up after the end of last season when coach Brian Armstrong left for the same job with Nevada.

A group of former ‘Dogs: Smith is now the latest in a long line of former players who serve on Tedford’s staff.

  • The list starts with Tedford himself, who played quarterback for Fresno State from 1981-1982,
  • Linebackers coach Tim Skipper, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin and defensive backs coach J.D. Williams all played for Fresno State as well.
