LeBron James named male flagbearer for Team USA

James will carry the American Flag during the opening ceremony at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

LeBron James has been chosen as the male flagbearer for the U.S. Olympic team at the opening ceremony of the Paris Games, making him the first men’s basketball player to receive this honor.

Fellow star Stephen Curry nominated James to be the male flagbearer.

What he’s saying: “It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

What we’re watching: James will be joined by a female flagbearer at the Olympics, something the International Olympic Committee decided to do ahead of the 2020 games.

  • The United States’ female flagbearer will be announced on Tuesday.

Flashback: This will be the fourth Olympic games for James.

  • He got his start with the team in 2004, which turned out to be a down year as the U.S. won bronze.
  • James helped the U.S. return to the peak with gold medals in 2008 and 2012. He did not play in 2016 or 2021.
