The big picture: Closing Remarks took home the victory in the $200,000 Royal Heroine Stakes by a 1 ½ lengths under jockey Joe Bravo and trainer Carla Gaines.

  • The Harris Farms horse won the one-mile turf race with a time of 1:34:82.
  • Having placed in four out of her last five starts, Closing Remarks came into the race as the 6-5 favorite, paying $4.40 for the win.

State of play: Closing Remarks settled into fourth place early in the race as Honey Jar took the lead to the quarter pole with a two lengths lead. Closing Remarks made her move at that point and wheeled four-deep into the lane to win.

The backstory: Closing Remarks is a five-year-old mare that was born in Coalinga in February 2018. After spending her first two years at the Harris Farms River Ranch in Sanger, she returned to Coalinga to begin her training.

  • She has won $554,820 throughout her career so far, which began in Del Mar in August 2020.

What they’re saying: “It’s really great because we bred her, her dam and her granddam,” said John Harris. “I don’t know if we’re lucky or smart, but we are happy with the way it’s going. These graded stakes really make the game and it’s nice to have a graded stakes win at Santa Anita. It is surreal.”
