Former Diamond ‘Dog Hopfe starts professional career with Grizzlies

Tommy Hopfe played in 10 games with the Grizzlies last season after getting drafted by the Rockies. Now he has an opportunity to settle in and work his way up to the Major Leagues.

One former Fresno State Diamond ‘Dog gets to continue his professional career in Fresno.

After four years starring for Fresno State, Tommy Hopfe is trying to work his way up through the Colorado Rockies organization, starting with the Fresno Grizzlies.

The big picture: Hopfe had a cup of coffee with the Grizzlies last year after the 2024 MLB Draft.

  • He was selected in the 9th round by the Rockies last year and sent to the Grizzlies for 10 games.
  • Now he’ll have a chance to put in a full season with the Grizzlies – Colorado’s Single-A Minor League affiliate.
  • He is listed as an infielder on the Grizzlies’ roster and will likely play all over the diamond.

Hopfe’s college career: Hopfe helped lead the Bulldogs to the Mountain West Championship last year, playing as the primary first baseman.

  • He led Fresno State with a .360 batting average, totaling 89 hits, 45 RBIs, 57 runs, 19 doubles, 3 triples and 6 home runs.
  • The 2024 season was his second in a row where he was named to the All-Mountain West team.
  • Overall, Hopfe hit .329 in his four years as a Diamond ‘Dog, with a .408 on-base percentage and .536 slugging percentage across 175 games.

What he’s saying: “I’m grateful for it, obviously,” Hopfe told reporters when asked about continuing in Fresno. “We’re going year five here in Fresno. Obviously working toward other things, but I’m grateful that my professional journey gets to begin here. I already know this town quite well, so the eating’s pretty nice and the staying part of stuff’s really nice as well.”
