Adrian Wiggins applies to return as Fresno State women’s basketball coach

The Clovis East boys basketball coach led the Bulldogs to five consecutive NCAA Tournaments during his tenure.

Adrian Wiggins reportedly would like to return to Fresno State to lead the women’s basketball program once again.

Multiple outlets reported Wednesday that Wiggins has applied to be the head coach over a decade after he departed from the university.

Driving the news: The head coach position opened up earlier this week when longtime coach Jaime White announced her retirement.

The big picture: If Wiggins is hired, he would make his return to Fresno State after leaving in 2012 for the same position at Ole Miss.

  • But Wiggins was let go from Ole Miss by October of 2012 due to NCAA recruiting violations.
  • He returned to the Fresno area in 2013 to coach the Clovis East boys basketball team, where he has remained ever since.

A look at Wiggins’ tenure: Wiggins first joined Fresno State in 2002 as an assistant coach under Britt King and remained under Stacy Johnson-Klein the following year.

  • When Johnson-Klein was suspended from the program in February 2005, Wiggins was named as the interim head coach and was not named as the permanent hire until April 2006.
  • Wiggins led the Bulldogs to a 175-66 record throughout his tenure, winning four regular season Western Athletic Conference championships.
  • He also led Fresno State to five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament to close out his tenure, although the Bulldogs never advanced out of the first round.
