Judge rules to not release sexually violent predator in Merced County

The predator, who was first convicted of sexual crimes in 1993, has been housed in a state hospital.

A sexually violent predator will not be released in Merced County after all.

The decision came after local and state officials spoke out.

Driving the news: Kevin Gray, 72, was scheduled to be released on parole in Ballico, which is located northwest of Merced.

  • But last month Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil (D–Jackson), Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke and Merced County District Attorney Nicole Silveira held a press conference speaking out against Gray’s scheduled parole.
  • They said at the time that a judge in Stanislaus County did not follow state law by moving to house Gray in Merced County when he is released from a state hospital.
  • Silveira announced last Friday that Gray will not be released in Ballico after successfully arguing in court that Gray should not come to Merced County.
